1986 Nissan 720ST — 4×4 | Rare Fuel-Injected “Electro Injection” | Factory Brush Guard & Sport Bar | Highly Original. A rare, highly original example of one of the most collectible small trucks of the 1980s — complete, straight, and largely rust-free with 189,278 believed original miles.
The Nissan 720 pickup was produced from 1980 through 1986, and the final-year ST specification represents the most refined and well-equipped version of the model. This is a 4×4 example in the ST specification with the rare factory “Electro Injection” fuel injection system — a meaningful distinction. Nissan’s Z24 engine in carbureted form was already well-regarded, but the fuel-injected variant offered improved cold-start behavior, better fuel economy, smoother throttle response, and reduced emissions. It was a genuine technical advancement for a small truck of this era, and it makes this a notably more desirable example than the standard carbureted 720.
Drivetrain & Mechanicals
The engine starts reliably every time and runs well. After approximately five minutes of driving, there are occasional split-second stutters — not debilitating, but worth noting. The truck can be driven and used as is. The cause has been partially addressed: one of the two ignition coil assemblies (the Z24 uses dual coils managing four plugs each, for a total of eight spark plugs) has been replaced with a new factory unit. The second coil assembly is present but has not yet been replaced — doing so will in all likelihood resolve the intermittent issue entirely, making this a straightforward and inexpensive fix. A new Delphi fuel pump has recently been fitted.
The 5-speed manual transmission shifts cleanly through all gears with no grinding or pop-out. The clutch feels strong. The 4×4 system and transfer case operate correctly. No fluid leaks are observed anywhere.
The rear driveshaft has been balanced and rebuilt at some point in the truck’s past.
Body & Exterior
Body and chassis are nearly rust-free. There are a few very minor rust spots, specifically at the inside bottom corners of both doors, visible in the images. Everywhere else, the structure is clean and solid. Panel gaps are excellent throughout with no signs of any accident history.
Paint presents well with decent gloss and shine. There are chips and scratches throughout consistent with honest use over nearly four decades — nothing unusual, and nothing that detracts from the overall presentation of a well-preserved original truck.
Two rare factory options are present and intact: the factory brush guard and the factory roll bar / sport bar. These are increasingly difficult to find on surviving 720s and add considerable period-correct appeal. The lights mounted to the roll bar are not currently operational.
Interior
The interior is completely original — seat fabric, door cards, and trim all present as delivered from the factory. Most surviving examples have had seats reupholstered, door cards replaced, or aftermarket components fitted over the decades. This one has not.
All lights and gauges are operational with two exceptions: the oil pressure gauge and voltmeter are currently non-functional, likely due to disconnected wiring rather than failed gauges — a minor item to trace and reconnect.
First-generation Nissan 4×4 pickups in original, unmodified condition have become increasingly sought after. The combination of the rare fuel-injection, factory brush guard, factory sport bar, highly original interior, and nearly rust-free body makes this an unusually complete and correct example. A rare, original, and honest 1986 Nissan 720ST 4×4 — drive it, preserve it, or restore it from an exceptional foundation.
