1972 MGB V-6 Conversion – Frame-Off Rotisserie Build | 3.4L GM V6 | T5 Transmission | Outstanding Performance

This 1972 MGB underwent a full frame-off, ground-up rotisserie restoration, and very well executed 3.4L GM V6 conversion using the highly regarded kit and build documentation from BMC British Automobile of Isanti, Minnesota. Replacement and support parts for this specific conversion remain readily available directly from BMC, and the complete instruction manual and parts list are included with the sale.

Every component of the car was new, rebuilt, or restored during the build. The result is a beautifully engineered MGB that dramatically outperforms a stock example while maintaining the balanced, communicative driving feel the MGB is known for.

Performance & Driving Impressions

The 3.4L SFI (L32) V6 from a 1994 Pontiac Firebird delivers a huge leap in performance—smooth, torque-rich, and extremely quick in comparison to a factory B-series four-cylinder. The car remains well balanced, yet powerful enough that the rear tires can be spun easily under spirited throttle.

The Borg Warner T5 World Class 5-speed (paired with a modified S10 short-throw shifter) is a perfect match, offering precise, crisp gear changes and excellent drivability. The upgraded clutch hydraulics (Howe HTOB) and custom driveshaft further refine the drivetrain.

Handling is significantly improved thanks to electric power steering, SuperPro bushings, a Moss Panhard bar, and fully restored suspension.

Paint, Body & Exterior

Finished in Toyota “Quicksand,” the body was completely stripped, sandblasted, epoxy-primed, and treated with Raptor bedliner on the undercarriage and interior floors. The paint presents as an amateur driver-quality 10-footer: glossy from a distance, but with various small blemishes visible up close (see images). The color appears more yellow in photos, but in person reads more like a desert sand tone.

The fiberglass MGC-style hood (the only non-metal exterior panel) helps reduce weight, though its paint texture differs slightly from the steel panels. Exterior highlights include:

  • Deleted side marker lights and body molding

  • Black 15” VTO Classic 8 wheels

  • LED headlights with glass CIBIE lenses

  • Euro-spec LED tail lamps

  • 1973 honeycomb grille with custom body-color MGB emblem

  • Mazda Miata third brake light

Interior

The interior is thoughtfully upgraded and extremely comfortable, with a clean, purposeful look:

  • Heated Pontiac Fiero leather seats (Mr. Mike’s upholstery)

  • Moss carpet and door panels

  • Steel dash conversion

  • Speedhut Revolution Series gauges including electronic tachometer and GPS speedometer

  • Robbins Stow-Away soft top with zip-out rear window

  • Classic Air heater

  • Roll bar

Everything inside is fully functional—lights, gauges, electrics, and seat heaters.

Overall

This is a turn-key, high-quality, extremely fast MGB V6 conversion built to a very desirable specification. It retains the feel and balance of an MGB but delivers the power and responsiveness of a modern lightweight sports car. A rare opportunity to purchase a fully documented, well-executed restomod that is ready to enjoy immediately.

Restoration completed in 2019.
