An exceptional, thoroughly sorted early MGB with over two decades of dedicated ownership, a high-performance engine rebuild by a respected specialist, and documentation stretching back to 1969.

The History
This rust-free Florida car was purchased new and kept for its first 8,000 miles before being sold to a second owner in Flagler Beach, Florida — who made it his daily driver through college, graduate school, and beyond. Original college parking stickers and period window decals still tastefully adorn the car, telling a story no restorer could recreate. He maintained a comprehensive, handwritten maintenance record beginning in the summer of 1969 at 54,000 miles and running through July 1992 at 124,173 miles, at which point the car went into storage. It remained there for ten years until the current — and third — owner acquired it in March 2002.

The Rebuild
The third owner undertook a thorough, no-compromise restoration. The original 3-main bearing engine, which came along as a spare with the purchase, was rebuilt by Tim Handy at MG Matters into a high-performance street tune. The build includes 10:1 pistons, alloy head, 1¾” carburetors, exhaust headers, performance cam, new bearings and rings, and electronic ignition. Transmission duties are handled by the correct 3-synchro D-type overdrive gearbox, paired with the correct OD shift lever, OD speedometer, and a 3.7 banjo crown and pinion — a proper, correct-spec drivetrain from top to bottom.

The suspension was comprehensively rebuilt with new coil springs, front A-arms, sway bar and arm bushings, rebound rubbers, HD front shocks, and swing axle assembly rebuild with new rotors and packed wheel bearings. A new interior by Newton Commercial was professionally fitted, complete with new seat foam and carpets. A white factory hardtop — a rare option — was sourced, fully restored (chrome hardware re-plated, new rubber seals, new quarterlite windows, repainted by Gassman Automotive), and mounted. A 4-point safety harness was also added. The car retains its correct positive-earth electronics throughout.
Performance & Track Validation

In May 2009, the MGB was put on a chassis dyno at Abacus Racing in Virginia Beach, recording 79.9 bhp peak power and 92.5 ft-lb of torque — impressive figures that reflect the quality of the MG Matters build. On the road, it delivers excellent mid-range pull, a predictable and light driving character, and approximately 28 mpg on the highway, validated over multiple long-distance touring trips including several Watkins Glen runs.

The current reading on the replacement OD speedometer is 112,577 miles, meaning the car has covered approximately 20,000 miles since the MG Matters rebuild — enough to be thoroughly sorted, not enough to have worn anything out.
Condition

Condition

The paint is very presentable with real depth and gloss. The body is laser straight, panel and door gaps are phenomenal, and the door shut action is — by some margin — the best we have experienced on any MGB. The undercarriage is insanely solid, straight, and rust-free, with no signs of accident history anywhere. The factory hardtop is in excellent condition, adding classic style and genuine all-weather practicality.

The interior is in great shape throughout. Seats, door panels, and top dash pad are all excellent with no rips or tears in the upholstery. The dash face is beautifully preserved in its original form, carrying just the right amount of historical patina. Particularly noteworthy is the inner chrome ring surround fitted around the speedometer and tachometer, which remains in place. This piece is notoriously difficult — often impossible — to source on an early MGB, and its presence here speaks to how carefully this car has been kept over the decades.

The engine starts easily and maintains excellent oil pressure. The gearbox and clutch are healthy with no grinding or gear pop-out. Lights and gauges are operational. Suspension, brakes, and steering are all dialed in and feel genuinely well sorted — this is not a car that needs anything.
Documentation

Maintenance records are copious, dating back to the late 1960’s. The handwritten log from the second owner covers over two decades of daily-driver use. The current owner’s expense records document every part, every service, and every mile from 2002 through 2025 — a remarkable and essentially complete paper trail for any early MGB.
